5 Ways to Darken a Room (Without Repainting)

Jul 2026 · 1 min read

Too much light ruining your movie nights or your sleep? You don’t need heavy drapes or a paint job. Try these.

1. Add a blackout liner

A blackout liner attaches behind almost any shade fabric, turning a light-filtering shade into a room-darkening one without changing the look you love.

2. Choose an outside mount

Mounting outside the frame — wider and taller than the opening — closes the light gaps that inside mounts leave along the edges.

3. Add a cassette valance

The top of a shade is where light leaks most. A cassette valance caps the roll and seals that gap.

4. Layer shades with drapes

A room-darkening shade plus side drapes gives you both function and softness — and total control.

5. Go for cellular blackout

Cellular blackout shades combine darkness with insulation, so the room stays dark and comfortable.
